Forests, farmland, lakes and streams — and the pollution we are undoing

Forests cover roughly 31 per cent of the world's land area and hold the large majority of its terrestrial biodiversity. Tropical rainforests are the densest concentration of that diversity: the Amazon basin alone is thought to contain around a tenth of all known species. Deforestation there is driven far less by the popular image of a logger with a chainsaw than by land conversion — cattle pasture, soy and palm oil — which is why certification schemes and supply-chain commitments have become the practical lever.

Certification is the mechanism most people can actually act on. The Forest Stewardship Council sets standards for timber and paper covering harvest rates, protection of high conservation value forest, and the rights of workers and indigenous communities, and audits the chain of custody so a label on a product can be traced back. It is not perfect, but a certified label is a checkable claim, which puts it ahead of unlabelled timber and ahead of vague packaging language like "eco" or "natural" with nothing behind it.

Fresh water is where forests and farmland meet. Nutrient runoff — nitrogen and phosphorus from fertiliser and manure — causes algal blooms that consume oxygen as they decay, producing the hypoxic "dead zones" that appear seasonally at the mouths of large agricultural rivers. Riparian buffers, the strips of trees and rooted vegetation left along a stream bank, intercept a meaningful share of that runoff before it reaches the water, while also shading the stream and stabilising the bank. Restoring them is one of the cheapest and best-evidenced interventions in freshwater management.

Why trees are worth counting in a city too

  • Heat. Shaded urban surfaces run dramatically cooler than exposed asphalt, which reduces the urban heat island and summer cooling demand.
  • Stormwater. A mature canopy intercepts rainfall and slows what reaches the drain — the same runoff problem that ends at the beach.
  • Air. Leaves trap particulate matter and absorb gaseous pollutants.
  • Soil. Roots hold banks and slopes together; removing them is how a hillside becomes a landslide.
