How contaminated soil, groundwater and indoor air actually get cleaned up
Environmental remediation is engineering, not slogans. In the United States the framework comes from CERCLA — the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980, universally called Superfund — which created the National Priorities List of contaminated sites and the legal machinery to make polluters pay for cleaning them.
The methods used at those sites are a small, well-understood set. Pump-and-treat extracts contaminated groundwater, runs it through granular activated carbon or an air stripper, and returns it. Soil vapour extraction pulls volatile organic compounds out of unsaturated soil under vacuum. Bioremediation feeds native soil bacteria the oxygen or nutrients they need to break down hydrocarbons themselves. In-situ chemical oxidation injects an oxidant to destroy contaminants in place. Permeable reactive barriers put a trench of reactive material — often zero-valent iron — across the path of a plume so the groundwater is treated as it flows through. Which one is chosen depends on the contaminant, the soil and the depth to water, and large sites frequently use several in sequence.
Indoor air is the piece of environmental science that most directly touches a household. The EPA has long reported that concentrations of some pollutants run several times higher indoors than outdoors, and that people in industrialised countries spend the overwhelming majority of their time inside. The sources are ordinary: volatile organic compounds off-gassing from paints, adhesives, air fresheners and conventional cleaning products; combustion by-products from gas cooking; and moisture problems that lead to mould. Ventilation, source control and reading an ingredient label are the three levers, and source control is the cheapest.
Terms worth knowing
- VOC — volatile organic compound; evaporates readily at room temperature, which is why you can smell it.
- Plume — the moving body of contamination spreading through groundwater from a source.
- Activated carbon — extremely porous carbon that adsorbs organic contaminants; the same technology in a water filter and a treatment plant.
- Surfactant — the molecule that lets water lift grease; plant-derived versions biodegrade faster than petroleum-derived ones.
